Fall is here! And with Fall, comes the cold and flu season once again. We don’t look forward to it, but did you know that warding off those germs can be easier than you think? God gave us plenty of resources in Nature to help keep us healthy, yet our society tends not to focus on Nature much. As I learn more about remedies found in Nature that have been used for hundreds of years, it baffles me why they are not being utilized more often.
There are obvious ways to help prevent viruses and bacteria from finding their way in.
Here are a few:
1. Avoid contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
2. Stay home when you are sick.
3. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
4. Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
6. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill.
And of course, get plenty of sleep, be physically active as much as possible, manage stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food. Simple, right? For some, life can get in the way and staying healthy may not be so simple.
If you want to boost your chances of avoiding colds and the flu or minimizing the symptoms, here are a few strategies from Nature, including my newest find, Black Elderberry Extract.
I have used the following gifts from Nature multiple times for myself and my family and have been amazed at the true benefits these gifts provide.
-
Echinacea
-
Black Elderberry
-
Melaleuca Oil (Tea Tree Oil)
-
Probiotics
-
Honey and Cinnamon
-
Multivitamins
My major line of defense as soon as a cold is coming on, is to use Echinacea in liquid form. Read more from my post:
Echinacea! A Great Choice for Immune Boosting Ability
Echinacea is a powerful immune booster to use when trying to combat illness. Echinacea is however, only to be used on a short-term basis for fighting illness, not as a daily prevention. The longest length of time you want to take Echinacea is two weeks, then take a break from it. That is why I was thrilled to come across Black Elderberry, another powerhouse of immune boosting properties. Black Elderberry Extract can be taken every day! This can be a great immune booster and prevention strategy.

What to do when a cold does sneak up on you? Immediately increase the Black Elderberry dosage and grab the Echinacea at the first sign of a cold or flu! Consistently take the recommended doses 3-4 times per day until symptoms disappear. The duration and severity will be reduced greatly. I don’t dread when my boys get a cold as much now because when I use the above strategies, their colds either don’t develop into much or don’t last near as long as in the past.
If you are taking probiotics, it is a good idea to increase the dosage too. Got a sore throat? Drink a few cups of warm water and honey per day until it goes away. I was amazed at how fast the honey, along with taking Echinacea, worked for my most recent oncoming sore throat. Zapped it out in just over a day. It never developed into a full-blown sore throat.

And last, but certainly not least, here is one of my go to favorite gifts from Nature: Melaleuca Oil (Tea Tree Oil). It is a natural antibacterial and antifungal. I can’t tell you enough how much I love this oil! It has helped my family repeatedly during the times a cold has surfaced. I run a humidifier with 10 drops of Melaleuca Oil during the day and at night. It aids in better breathing and nasal congestion. This seems odd, but we also rub a drop of Melaleuca Oil in each nostril 3 times per day and it helps in reducing the symptoms of a cold.
