Ever enter a home and immediately notice a wonderful scent?  Maybe that home is yours?  What type of air freshener are you using?  There are all different types of air fresheners including room sprays, plug-in deodorizers, odor neutralizers, air sanitizers, and aromatherapy candles.  None of these actually get rid of smells.  They cover up what is still there.

Are air fresheners safe to use?  Or, are they creating a toxic polluting environment?  Most store-bought air fresheners contain formaldehyde, petroleum distillates, p-dichlorobenzene and aerosol propellants.    Hmmm….these ingredients are NOT what I want lurking in my home.  Each one of these can be harmful to our health.  I have never been a big fan of air fresheners, but I do like a fresh,  clean-smelling home.  I am excited to have found a few more natural alternatives thanks to the articles below!

Here is one more natural approach to try:

  • 5 ml (1 tsp) baking soda (bicarbonate of soda)
  • 5 ml (1 tsp) lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • 2-3 drops essential oil (of choice – Tea Tree Oil is my favorite)
  • 500 ml (2 cups) hot water

Combine all in a spray bottle and spray around home as needed.

In closing, with a little extra precaution and minimal effort, you can enjoy a great smelling home AND be at ease with the air quality you are breathing.

Have a great weekend!
